What is AEO & AI Search?
No standardized taxonomy exists yet — agencies, publishers, and SEO specialists have adopted overlapping acronyms including GEO, AEO, GSO, LLMO, and AIO to describe roughly the same set of tactics (eMarketer, 2026). Most agencies now treat AEO and GEO as functionally interchangeable in service delivery (LLM Pulse, 2026). The working distinction we use: AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is structuring content to be extracted as a direct answer — featured snippets, Google AI Overviews, voice/answer boxes. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is getting cited or synthesized inside a generative chat response — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini.

Why this matters now
68.01% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click in the January–April 2026 study window — up 7.56 points from 60.45% in 2024 (SparkToro, analyzing Similarweb clickstream data, 2026). AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of all Google searches, and when one appears, click-through on the ranked results below it drops by nearly 60% (SparkToro, 2026). That's not a shift at the margins — that's most searches.
The traffic that does arrive from AI platforms is growing fast and shifting where it lands. Overall AI-search referral traffic grew 16× from 2024 to 2026 — 0.02% of total site traffic in 2024, to 0.24% in 2025, to 0.32% in 2026 (SE Ranking, analyzing 101,574 websites across 250 countries, Jan 2025–Apr 2026, published 2026-06-18). Here's how that traffic splits by platform, and how fast each one is growing:

74.78% of AI referral traffic — still dominant by raw volume, up 27% year over year.
Gemini
11.56% share, but growing +231% year over year — the fastest-growing destination on the list.
Perplexity
7.23% share, roughly flat to a slight decline year over year.

3.51% share, up 31% year over year.
Claude
2.62% share, up a striking +320% year over year — smallest slice, fastest climb.
Two things worth planning around: ChatGPT still dominates raw volume, but Claude and Gemini are the fastest-growing destinations by a wide margin — optimize for one engine today and you're planning for last year's traffic split (SE Ranking, 2026).
The honest Google constraint
Google's own Search Central guidance — Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search, published 2026-05-15 and updated 2026-07-10 — states plainly: "From Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." On the specific tactics most AEO vendors sell as their core deliverable, Google is direct: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search" — on llms.txt specifically, "Google Search ignores them." And on structured data: "there's no special schema.org markup you need to add."
That directly contradicts a chunk of the AEO/GEO advice circulating right now — Search Engine Journal (2026), covering the guidance, notes it "contradicts advice from existing GEO resources, which have promoted chunking and structured data as priorities." We'd rather tell you that up front than sell you an llms.txt file as if it moves Google's AI Overviews. It doesn't, per Google's own documentation. What that leaves as genuinely engine-specific work — entity consistency, directory presence, content formatted for extraction, authentic third-party mentions — is scoped honestly to the platforms it actually affects: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini's consumer app, none of which Google's ruling governs.

Is AEO different from SEO, or is it a rebrand?
Additive, not a rebrand. The mechanics that make a page rankable — crawlability, page speed, intent matching, real backlinks — are the same mechanics that make it extractable, and Google's own guidance says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO. AEO adds a second target on top of ranking: getting quoted by name inside an AI-generated answer, not just listed on a results page.
Does adding llms.txt or special AI markup help me rank in Google's AI Overviews?
No. Google's own Search Central guidance, updated 2026-07-10, says plainly that Google Search ignores llms.txt files and that no special schema.org markup is required for generative AI search. We scope that work honestly: it may have plausible upside for AI crawlers that work differently than Google's — ChatGPT's and Perplexity's — but we never sell it to you as a Google-ranking play, because Google's own documentation says it isn't one.
